post rock

A style of music that probably emerged in the 1980s to 1990s and probably passed me by completely, at least I didn't perceive their bands as a style of their own.

And I probably would never have come into closer contact with it if I hadn't looked at a few Video conferencing would have participated. Right from the start I was puzzled as to why so many attendees, and then more and more, wore headphones at the conferences; since I'm more of a listener in most conferences these days and really enjoy this passive role, I mostly look at the participants and the backgrounds presented — especially when they're still real. By the way, you can learn a lot from it.

The explanation for the headphones is better communication with each other, similar to the helicopter pilots. Another possibility is the import of audio books or ... music, which brings us back to the topic. I myself use my hearing aids, which have also been offering such an option for a few years — but then I became convinced that I was missing out on too much in video conferences due to my hearing impairment.

In the aftermath - not in chat - of such a meeting, I would like to emphasize that we came to talk about a music group that I didn't know at all and that is attributed to post-rock. And so, thanks to the internet, I'm hearing this group up and down right now: Do Make Say Think.

I don't yet have a final opinion about this group and certainly not about the style of music itself, but to the chagrin of my better half I have already bought the current record.

Addendum

One of my readers told me that he himself still likes to listen to "The Sea and Cake", "Tortoise" and also "Mogwai".

Bundestag election 2.0

That Berliners can no longer even hold correct elections, we've known for a while. On September 26, 2021, an attempt was made in Berlin to re-elect not only the Bundestag but also the House of Representatives and the twelve district parliaments. In all elections there were such serious shortcomings that election fraud and falsification can no longer be ruled out.

After a long back and forth, the Constitutional Court of the State of Berlin will now decide on November 16, 2022 on the validity of the elections to the Berlin House of Representatives and the district assemblies. But as is well known, "in court and on the high seas..."

And after a lot of back and forth, the Federal Returning Officer also came to the conclusion that the federal election should be completely repeated in six of the twelve Berlin constituencies. The twelve Berlin constituencies are divided into a total of 2 electoral districts.

After further haggling, the parties - the Bundestag itself decides on the Bundestag elections - now agreed that the elections in Berlin should now be repeated in 431 constituencies - this does not hurt anyone and everything will remain as it is.

The really bad thing is that utter incompetence or, even more dangerously, a "feigned incompetence" by blatantly anti-democrats is now massively rigging democratic elections.

Webex

I was able to do this yesterday video conferencing tool test twice extensively. So far I had only started it from the browser, now I have installed it on one of my computers. Now I'm curious to see if I'll be sitting behind the computer that's now suitable for the next meeting.

Irrespective of this, both sessions were worthwhile, although I liked the first one more because I found the topic there to be more exciting overall and for very current reasons. However, the outlook for the upcoming meetings of the last round gives hope that there will be completely new insights into the topic for me note box will give.

After almost three years with COVID-19, three tools have established themselves for me, firstly the old one Skype or Whatsapp and on the other side Goto now also Webex. Thanks to COVID-19, there are many more such tools, which are certainly also very popular, but could not catch on with me. A tool that I had built on right at the beginning of COVID-19 because it was quite innovative, but was left behind. This tool is virbela, which is ideal for conferences of all kinds with its open campus as well as its private spaces.

And so it will probably take another pandemic before this technology will also prevail among the majority of users.

  • Here, too, there is a good mix between wild growth and monoculture. You have to appreciate having a choice.

    • It's correct. And that's why we even had our own forum in 2019 to agree on future video conferencing tools. A majority of our association opted for GoTo, the schools and educational institutions more for Webex. Personally, I was more in favor of Skype with MS Teams and especially Virbela. The party members rather for Zoom. Then Wonder.me came along at short notice.

Today we use GoTo internally and externally Webex or MS Teams, and for the very special ones Zoom. Personally, I still have Skype and Virbela.

  • A brief note on the subject of video conferencing tools: Since our customers use almost everything there is, from ZOOM to MS Teams, WebEX, Google Meet, Apple Facetime, GoTOMeeting, Skype and various "exotics" such as AWS Chime, I can only say that every tool is used has its strengths and weaknesses. And yes, if you install the client app, in most cases the whole system is much more performant and usually easier to use.
None of our customers use Skype anymore, most are on MS Teams or ZOOM, followed by WebEx and Google Meet, all others are far behind.
MS Teams often comes in a bundle with MS Office and "sneaks" into companies. Even if I still consider ZOOM to be the most powerful system for larger groups (5 or more participants). Easy to use, good clients, acceptable bandwidth requirements, which is not entirely irrelevant for weak DSL connections in the countryside.

    • Thanks for the additions. ZOOM is actually very popular, but unfortunately it still poses a security challenge today; I'm always amazed at where I find all the files and leftover data after using ZOOM. And so I now have an older computer that I only use for my ZOOM conference participation. But certainly not many do that.

      • So MS Teams is much more suspicious to me than ZOOM - especially since everything is embedded in the Office365 file swamp and a lot of "comfort functions" pass on all kinds of data somewhere without you noticing. You can somehow switch it off somewhere, but at the latest after the next Office update everything is back to default. Interested groups will always read and listen, regardless of the system.

        • The big difference is that neither Microsoft nor Apple need any additional software in order to be able to access personal data if necessary — if you don't want this altogether, you have to fall back on UNIX and Co.

That's why MS Teams is preferable to new software like ZOOM, which obviously adds actual vulnerabilities — not perceived ones.
