When this instant messaging service was launched in 2003, it was as if at least the entire professional world was waiting for it. The Skype software was developed by Ahti Heinla, Priit Kasesalu and Jaan Tallinn created, and Skype or Whatsapp from Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis founded as an independent company.

My family and I used Skype from the beginning and used the phone, chat and video features on a daily basis until the end of 2012.

From 2011 I experimented more and more with my own chat and video tools, so that Skype was more and more forgotten for me. With the end of my experiments in 2019 and the onset of COVID-19, I rediscovered this service and have no hesitation in recommending it.

Skype has been part of Microsoft since 2011 and since 2017 you can use the integrated "Send Money" function during a chat PayPal also transfer money. And files of any type can still be sent up to a size of 300 megabytes. This means that Skype remains a very good "all-rounder", which is also free if you don't want to make use of its "telephone function".

Probably only the fact that the video conferences are limited in terms of number of people, but this is only so as not to compete with the Microsoft Teams software, and prevents us humans from wanting to use what is currently "in". that Skype will again become the general standard of telecommunications.

Call via Skype: call me

Addendum 6.1.2024

Today I came across a slightly different obituary on Skype, a CNBC piece that asks whether Skype even has a future. It's pleasing to learn that there are probably another 30 million people besides me who continue to use Skype and hopefully Microsoft doesn't want to upset these people by switching off this service.
