Trump's Dire Words Raise New Fears About His Authoritarian Bent — The former president is focusing his most vicious attacks on domestic political opponents, setting off fresh worries among autocracy experts. (last accessed on November 21.11.2023st, 16.50, XNUMX:XNUMX p.m.; by the way, my readers can read the article free of charge).

“There are echoes of fascist rhetoric, and they're very precise,” said Ruth Ben Ghiat, a professor at New York University who studies fascism. “The overall strategy is an obvious one of dehumanizing people so that the public will not have as much of an outcry at the things that you want to do.”

This post by Michael C. Bender and Michael Gold is a must-read for everyone who will soon be making a pilgrimage to the USA again for talks with the Republicans in order to celebrate their political proximity to the largest and oldest party in the United States.

But the rest of us should also deal with the phenomenon Donald Trump take a closer look, as this is actually just an American version of Victor Orban, Vladimir Putin, Recep Erdoğan and far too many other European politicians. The only thing that is more interesting is how their mostly formerly democratic parties now relate to their respective leading lights and how the “sister parties” from other countries react to these developments.

The GOP and the Union make good subjects for investigation; Trump's rhetoric has now not only reached the AfD, but is also increasingly catching on with the other opposition parties. Even among the other popular and current government parties, one hears more and more often that “they are increasingly watching the people’s mouths again”.

So we can only hope that the American electorate will show us again in 2024 that “the people” are no longer as stupid and irresponsible as we were in the 1930s. And that as a result, our democratic parties will come together again and agree on a democratic election campaign - fully based on our Basic Law - by the 2025 federal election.

It would be even better if we agreed on solutions to problems and not just blame!
