Johann Wolfgang von GoetheWilhelm Meister's book The Years of Apprenticeship (1795-1796) is still worth reading. Originally something I read during my studies, I still enjoy reading it today.
The following quote is from this, namely from Book 8, Chapter 4:
“If we … take people as they are, we make them worse; if we treat them as if they were what they should be, we take them where they need to be taken.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Although Goethe's knowledge is still valid today, it is becoming increasingly difficult, at least for me, to implement this advice.
But this is probably only due to their own age.
