High Noon

Today it wasn't even "twelve o'clock in the afternoon" when several events began to force themselves on me. Of course, everything needs to be done before the end of the year - at least according to those who actually caused it.

This meant that my Advent season dissolved into happiness more quickly than I had intended. Much more experienced or experienced citizens avoid this by simply moving to warmer climes at the end of November at the latest and not showing up again until spring. Some others simply duck out all year round.

The question remains why so much unfinished business is piling up towards the end of the year, completely contrary to our culture and religion. There used to be a saying that lazy people get busy in the evening. Today the procrastinators probably only wake up at the beginning of Advent and then want to be entertained by everyone else.

Now is the time to get into a better mood Yves Montand on the turntable. His long-playing record “À Paris” was first pressed in 1962 and contains chansons from the 1940s and 1950s. None other than Edith Piaf discovered and supported the young Italian migrant; When he became famous himself, he probably had to go his own way. And they were very successful, even if it was more as film actors.

Pisa study

Already two days ago were also The current PISA studies were announced by the OECD. In Germany, the PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) study is commissioned by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education of the Federal Republic of Germany. And so we can confidently assume that things are actually much worse for our students.

The PISA study takes place every three years and covers the areas of reading, mathematics and science. Around 700 students from 000 countries took part in the 81 survey - representing a good 2022 million students around the world. The focus in this study was on mathematics. Overall, there was a serious decline in the OECD performance average in the current survey. Compared to 29, it fell by 2018 points in reading and almost 10 points in mathematics; The decline in performance in mathematics is three times as high as in the worst previous study.

First of all, the students in Germany are just above the OECD average in all areas, which has to be seen as a catastrophe because it means we are no longer competitive as an industrial and knowledge location, let alone able to survive. Sooner or later, all world market leaders will have to leave unless something changes for the better very quickly and the companies want to continue to survive - at least the young top performers will follow.

Addendum

A reader sent me the following newspaper clipping:

lectures

Just in time for St. Nicholas, I sent my preferred reading dates for the summer semester of 2024 to Heilbronn University. In this way I also build on the coffee that accompanies the lectures Detlef Stern.

Now I'm excited to see how many students will come to my lectures next semester. Even more so on how they listen, collaborate or how many students walk the entire route with me - I certainly wouldn't dare dream of an extra mile. And to make the whole thing really exciting for me, I have set myself a new goal.

I'm also thinking about whether I will accompany my lectures this time with my own - completely unofficial - blog posts; I don’t really know yet whether I’ll call these “long weeks or days”.

  • The PISA study again provides a distorted picture of the actual situation in our country. It does not take into account what language skills the students have (without knowledge of German you simply cannot follow the lessons) and how long they have been integrated into the German school system. Experience shows that only a few, but very weak, students bring down the level of the entire class massively. This, in conjunction with “official requirements” regarding the quotas to be achieved for qualifications, is completely ruining our education system.

    • For years, the “official guidelines” have met the educational socialist demands of all governments who, in my opinion, want to generate voters who are as stupid as possible.

It is also a well-known fact that students who lack language skills place an additional burden on our school system. However, I fear, and my many years of experience from elementary school to university confirm this, that this also increasingly applies to those students who and their parents have always lived with us.

I continue to assume that too much welfare state combined with the undermining of the performance principle creates stupid people.
