prize-giving

Today's award ceremony as part of the European competition at the primary school in Biberach surprisingly coincides with the article by Simon Gajer in the voice of Heilbronn (15.4.2024, 9.34 clock). Before we could present our prizes to 21 winners, the headmistress thanked a donor who made swimming lessons possible for the school. Actually, the city of Heilbronn would be responsible for ensuring that all students up to the 4th grade can learn to swim - since their own parents often fail completely!

For years I have been complaining about the lack or misuse of swimming pools in Heilbronn; this as a swimmer and also as an active and now former lifeguard! But the fact that the Biberach elementary school, which has a swimming pool right next door, can only secure swimming times for its students through donations from the population is an indictment of the city administration as well as the local council and especially the local councilors from Biberach.

In this case, the local council's foregoing another trip to Amsterdam or to even more attractive areas could secure all swimming lessons at Biberach primary school for years to come - the majority of the local council still has their own priorities.

Even if Detlef Stern, at least in the subjects he teaches, doesn't believe in pure lectures, which he yesterday described as "PPTX karaoke“, I can still get good things out of the lecture. I don't mean the obligatory “show a picture”, but rather a lecture in the form of a pure teaching discussion. I personally prefer not to use any aids, but this only works if my listeners can imagine their own images in their heads while listening. And in my opinion this can only be achieved if they have read a lot beforehand. And so the question remains, how can you create images for little to no readers? The best way is through practical practice and the well-known trial and error - but then you don't need a college and certainly not a university. A teaching career would certainly be more suitable for these students; and for our society to return many subjects and topics to vocational schools.

Regardless, there are minimum requirements for apprentices and students and both should be able to master these. It starts with the salutation. Simply saying “hello” and preferably with a “you” after it might not be enough. And if you already communicate with your lecturer or trainer in writing, it would certainly not be a bad idea to use the tools provided for this purpose. Today, a corresponding email address is included. At least I don’t like communicating with “Häschen95” or “Gröfix2000”. There should be a first and last name as well as a company or university address.

When I even communicate with business information technology students, I simply expect attachments in a PDF format. Actually, I don't even need to mention that if the form alone is not right, the content is largely also inadequate.

Weekend Trip

We Free Voters are still waiting for approval for our posters. Last Friday I received permission for Bad Friedrichshall. After I ruled out the possibility that an overzealous colleague would want to advertise for us in neighboring towns, I now ask myself what this is all about? I don't assume that our administrations are now part of the third labor market. And so it could be that Bad Friedrichshall is now a district of Heilbronn and this administrative reform has simply not been announced to us yet.

What makes me a little suspicious is that on page 1 of the approval I'm still the Free Voters' Chairman, but on page 2 I'm already a member of the left. I was given this permission free of charge. Overall, a statement that describes the state of our republic quite well: anyone who is not stupid and lazy must at least be crazy in order to have a career with us, at least in the administration.

I simply left this official letter behind because I was already on my way to the bus station to visit the European Parliament in Strasbourg with a group of students and then to enjoy Strasbourg with my better half. This enjoyment largely consisted of us doing the trip again in October and then looking for a replacement for my previous favorite pub. I remained loyal to it for a good 30 years, going through a few changes of ownership, holding meetings there and repeatedly conveying the charm of Strasbourg to groups of visitors I led. The last trip showed that the recent change of ownership had turned a Strasbourg jewel into a tourist scam - completely overpriced and coupled with poor quality!

And so we wandered around the city looking and I finally found a pub that was twelve years old, but overall was more modern than my former favorite pub. To my complete surprise, they had the best quiche I've eaten in years! And to be on the safe side, we each ordered dessert. These were both excellent, my Alsatian cheesecake was a poem. Afterwards I looked at the kitchen and was perplexed: pure minimalism — totally my taste. The day was saved.

Back in Heilbronn, a bit of club bureaucracy and finishing our posters the next morning - all that's left now is the permit and the stickers, so we could get started. When enough other Free Voters joined, I moved my activities to Harmonie, where I had to prepare for the Europa Ball.

I spent Sunday licking wounds, preparing for my lecture on Tuesday and taking a little break, because today we continue with an awards ceremony for the European competition and the election campaign. My trip today took over with the meseno bus Frank Swiss.
