What do we have from Europe? -- A collection of questions

Made the first serve Dr. Michael Kromer, district chairman of the EUROPA-UNION Karlsruhe:

  • What can a single country achieve in terms of climate protection?
We need a strong Europe that actively supports adaptation to climate change and common CO² savings targets for a level playing field for the economy across the European Union

  • Who is doing something about plastic waste in the oceans?
Only Europe can do that! Anyone who wants to make the North Sea and the Mediterranean cleaner and better protect them in the future can only do so in the European Union. This is too big for individual countries.

  • Who will protect us from tired truck drivers and them from exploitation?
Only Europe can do that. If professional drivers are sent across Europe, the rules for occupational safety must also apply uniformly throughout Europe. Exploitation of Eastern European people also depresses working conditions here.

  • Who protects our rights against Google and Co.? Only Europe can do that
Data protection and the protection of our personal rights against companies based in the USA or on the Caiman Islands are not possible in Germany alone. Individual countries are not powerful enough for this.

  • Who pursues and arrests criminals when they flee abroad?
Only Europe can do that. The European arrest warrant is valid throughout Europe and is already being executed everywhere. This means that smugglers, car gangs and grandchild fraudsters can be effectively prosecuted.

  • How do I protect myself from unsafe products from other countries?
This is possible with the European Union's import controls for all products from non-European countries and is now practiced very effectively, especially in the pharmaceutical sector but also for electronic devices.

  • Why is using a cell phone so expensive in Switzerland and the UK?
The European Union has abolished data roaming charges within the EU.

The deputy national chairman of the EUROPA-UNION Florian Ziegenbalg supplemented with three further questions:

  • Why are the European elections even important for Baden-Württemberg?

The European Parliament is co-legislator in many areas that affect us, such as:

    • Rules for companies like the auto industry
    • Trade relations with other countries, important for our export-oriented medium-sized companies
    • EU-Switzerland relations
    • Rules for cross-border commuters
    • Agriculture and viticulture
    • Rules for consumers in the internal market (especially important in border regions)

The composition of the European Parliament also determines the direction of EU policy as a whole. As rapporteurs, individual MPs can have a relatively large influence on individual legislative proposals.

  • We don't have anything from the EU?

Baden-Württemberg owes its prosperity above all to:

    • Peace: the EU has brought us the longest period of peace in our history
    • Free trade: The EU internal market

The Bertelsmann Foundation on May 8, 2019 published a study that examines how the EU internal market affects the economic development of the member states and around 300 regions in Europe.

The result is that Baden-Württemberg benefits above average from the internal market. The study calculated a total income gain of 13,1 billion euros per year for BW through the internal market. Due to its strong export orientation, BW is dependent on the domestic market as a sales market.

  • The EU costs our tax money?

Not a cent from the Baden-Württemberg state budget flows into the EU budget. The EU budget is financed through various sources, the largest part comes from contributions from the member states, and in Germany from the federal budget. The EU budget is relatively small.

    For comparison:

Federal budget 2023: 476 billion euros (83 million inhabitants)

EU budget: 187 billion euros (450 million inhabitants)

State budget BW: 63 billion euros (11 million inhabitants)

The deputy district chairman from Mannheim, Dr. Sebastian Camarero, supplemented as follows:

  • Inflation is stronger than before the euro?

No. The euro has been around for 25 years. On average, the Eurosystem (ECB + national central banks) achieved the inflation target significantly better between 1999 and 2020 than was the case before. The phase of current inflation as a result of the Corona crisis and the supply bottlenecks and the energy crisis has driven up prices worldwide in 2021 and 2022. Inflation has been falling continuously since the end of 2022 and is approaching 2% again. In addition, the common currency has given Europe stability in various crises. The common currency supports the domestic market and has helped Germany achieve strong export performance.

  • I would like to add to the minutes of the “Europe Now!” discussion group that we participants also debated how “natural” Europe has become, especially for us younger people. Many of us don't know any different. Travel without borders, pay in euros, no customs fees when shopping online, we hardly know any other way. It is important to demonstrate these freedoms in order to arouse interest in Europe.
Likewise, the majority of the group agreed that we are not afraid, but rather feel concern and uncertainty when we observe current developments.

    • As we were able to determine, the half-life of such rounds is not sufficient to fill a forum even remotely. Where non-binding has become a principle, you really have to think about completely new communication channels.
