Europa cafe online

The Europa café online is an event of the EUROPA-UNION Baden-Württemberg.

(May 02, 2020)

From the point of view of the regional manager, today was a successful start. We could trouble shoot. In addition, our demand for a rapid network expansion of G5, especially in rural areas, has been remembered.

Our state chairwoman has today's topic: "How does the European Parliament work in Corona times?" also taken as an opportunity to report on the border closures, vouchers and our own production chains in Europe. She commented on corona bonds and reported on the latest developments in the Brexit negotiations.

She concluded that the effects of the pandemic should generally be used to provide impetus for rethinking and rethinking existing contracts. The demands for the federal state of Europe must be discussed more sustainably in the nation states.

The conference on the future of Europe must finally start so that the citizens of Europe are also included and involved in the future dialogue.

We look forward to the next Europa café online!

Today's second Europa Café online took us along Alejandro Cordero as rapporteur to Spain. The participants used the 60 minutes to discuss the following topics:

How do the Spaniards deal with the exceptional Corona situation?
Contact bans (leaving the house only in exceptional cases: medical emergencies, shopping, walking the dog), urban housing (some without balconies), psychological consequences for the Spaniards, new ideas for family processes (use of Instagram), the great wave of expressions of sympathy.

How do the Spaniards think about the EU?

Why are the consequences for Portugal and Spain so different?

How do the Spaniards think about Germany and how about France?

How were the Corona measures accepted by the population?
How was the impact felt in Parliament?
How is the opposition doing? and
How are the autonomous regions of Andalusia, Basque Country, Galicia and Catalonia doing?

Alejandro Cordero gave us an impressive look at the current situation in Spain. In perfect German!

Our third Europa Café online brought us closer to Italy in Corona times. In perfect German took Stefano Milia, political scientist and member of our European sister association Movimento Federalist Europeo (MFE) http://www.mfe.it/site/, connected directly from Rome, comment on the following topics:

  • Living with the curfew in force since March 9, 2020 and the impact on daily life
  • Anti-German and Euro-critical attitude of a large part of the Italian population
  • Insight into the political landscape, especially since the crisis in 2008
  • Influence of China and Russia in Italy
  • Economic situation especially for SMEs
  • Impact on Northern & and the less affected Southern Italy
  • Implementation of urgent administrative reforms
  • Possible grants for Italy
  • Reference to the many German-Italian support initiatives by the civilian population
  • Generation conflict in Italian society
  • Problems & lack of time to explain the complexity of the European system of civil society

Despite technical transmission problems, it was a very successful exchange and we hope that the associations can work more closely together in the future.

Am Thursday, 28th May 2020 we had Clement Maury at 19.30 p.m. on the subject: "Union citizens report from France" as a guest in the Europa café online. Mr. Maury is deputy President of the Young Europeans Strasbourg - Jeunes européens Strasbourg. He commented on these issues:

  • Support for neighboring countries in the medical care of corona patients
  • Effects on social interaction in the border area

At our first meeting in the evening we had fewer participants than usual. Thanks to the smaller group, we were able to use the very informative Powerpoint-based presentation to intensively exchange information about future campaigns by the European associations after the presentation. We are now planning to promote the constant exchange with representatives of the European associations from France, Switzerland, Austria, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and Germany (the circle can be constantly expanded) at jours fixe several times a year in video conferences. This should also give more impetus to tried and tested international event formats such as the Strasbourg/Freiburg Talks or the Hertenstein Talks. By the way, the newly tested software GoToMeeting has proven itself!

(July 15, 2020)

At the 10th Europa café online, our guest, Anna Deparnay-Grunenberg MEP, on the following questions on "Mobility in the corona crisis - traffic turnaround now even more so!" Position:

  • Why do we need a traffic turnaround?
  • Is the corona crisis also an opportunity?
  • What course must be set in the EU?

After Ms. Deparnay-Grunenberg's PowerPoint-based presentation, the following questions from the participants were discussed:

  • Covid-19 protection on the train and in public transport?
  • CO2 footprint on products?
  • European cooperation in the field of electromobility?
  • Is the European Parliament working towards using the Recovery Fund for the renaissance of the railways?
  • How far along is the development of Europe-wide standardized plugs for e-mobility?
  • Trans-European train tickets - through ticket, is it possible?
  • Keyword pop-up bicycle paths - bicycle concepts are available, but have to be negotiated with the citizenry. Why can't they be implemented in Stuttgart?
  • Transformation of the automotive industry?
  • Rethink commuter flat rates?

The discussion shows that many approaches that come from civil society could certainly find support and could also be implemented. Unfortunately, finding a consensus at the political level is very difficult.

  • Addition: Inflation is stronger than before the euro?

No. The euro has been around for 25 years. On average, the Eurosystem (ECB + national central banks) achieved the inflation target significantly better between 1999 and 2020 than was the case before. The phase of current inflation as a result of the Corona crisis and the supply bottlenecks and the energy crisis has driven up prices worldwide in 2021 and 2022. Inflation has been falling continuously since the end of 2022 and is approaching 2% again.
In addition, the common currency has given Europe stability in various crises.
The common currency supports the domestic market and has helped Germany achieve strong export performance.

  • I would like to add to the minutes of the “Europe Now!” discussion group that we participants also debated how “natural” Europe has become, especially for us younger people. Many of us don't know any different. Travel without borders, pay in euros, no customs fees when shopping online, we hardly know any other way. It is important to demonstrate these freedoms in order to arouse interest in Europe.
Likewise, the majority of the group agreed that we are not afraid, but rather feel concern and uncertainty when we observe current developments.

    • As we were able to determine, the half-life of such rounds is not sufficient to fill a forum even remotely. Where non-binding has become a principle, you really have to think about completely new communication channels.
