Being a consultant

I see the only sensible employment for an external consultant as taking on the role of a plumber.

A company has a problem, namely a blockage in the flow of information, which surprisingly cannot be solved with its own resources.

Now the external consultant (plumber) comes into play. He looks for, finds and removes the blockage. Operations can continue and the company receives an invoice.
