A broad coalition of democratic opposition parties led by Donald Tusk, is on track to win the Polish parliamentary elections and thus vote out the nationalist PiS party. This is a victory for the rule of law and democracy in Poland, but also for the EU's ability to act.

The PiS government recently blocked important EU projects in the area of migration together with the Orban government in Hungary. Without Poland, essential progress in European integration is hardly possible.

If the preliminary election results are confirmed, this is a great opportunity to reform Europe institutionally, strengthen it economically and breathe new life into the deadlocked Weimar Triangle together with Poland and France.

  • Like many convinced Europeans, I was hoping for a change in Poland. Now it is within reach. Here are a few thoughts on the results of the parliamentary elections in Poland:

Welcome back to Europe! – On the parliamentary elections in Poland

At the end of my reflection on the political developments in Poland, I wrote hopefully in Kümmerle's weblog on January 11.1.2022th, XNUMX: “The PiS government can be voted out of office in the elections in autumn 2023."

In the meantime, my hopes had dwindled again, but thanks to the remarkably high voter turnout on October 15.10.2023, XNUMX, Poland is facing a change of power. It hasn't been completed yet, but hopes have grown significantly: Poland will become European again! The joyful dances after the first election results were announced showed how much the people of Poland had hoped for this.

    Welcome back to Europe!
