Blog and press reviews

With this feed reader I also let other bloggers, journalists and authors have their say. I also place some articles and posts in the category Bookmarks away; A few of them also go into my note box.

High-ranking visitors had been announced in Munich in beautiful weather. None other than Mr. Kubiwahn asked for a small blogger meeting in the state capital weeks ago. With him and Mr. Rau I found myself in the company of real blogging veterans. Or to use Armin's metaphor: I was an inch pebble among milestones. It was nice, even if it was quite short (which was due to how I planned my weekend). And delicious. The Faun in the Glockenbachviertel now has some good culinary options. The bowls are highly recommended. I really like meetings like this. Seeing people you've interacted with online for years... Read more

LOL of the week was the announcement that the shutdown of the so-called old world, i.e. the computers from the cyberattack-infested network, is currently being postponed indefinitely. There are definitely good reasons for this, which I would probably agree with if in doubt. What's much more LOL is how the shutdown dates come about, probably rarely purely objectively. It always brings me back to one of my Ceterum Censeo: what if we applied the standards we apply to our students to decisions in my context? Speaking of which, apparently there is a connection between (perceived) importance and rambling statements. Today: Summaries of apps in the App Store, also in the Play Store.... Read more

I’ve asked my favorite musicians if, when they’re done writing a new song, they feel it’s the best song ever. All of them said yes. I’ve asked my favorite authors if, when they’re done writing a new book, they feel it was the best book ever. All of them said no. I don’t know why the two groups are so different. Do you? (Please post your thoughts, below, if so.) As for me? I think the best book ever written is “How to Live”. If I did nothing else with my life but write that book, it would have... Read more

Propaganda produced by Putin, right-wing extremists or Mr. Reichelt is available for free. However, a lot of important, educational content is behind paywalls. Another shorter long week. But with funny emails. Most of my readers know that the long week has nothing to do with the length of the week. If you don't know yet, I recommend a somewhat lesser-known book series by Terry Pratchett. The world doesn't always have to be flat. Most important aspect on Tuesday morning: does the local faculty coffee machine work? Despite all the euphoria last week: no. She wants to be cleaned again. Then you just have to go to the course sober, after a nice chat with Heinrich Kümmerle (including about the upcoming local elections). Already on Monday, then also... Read more

I read an article on social media in which a statistically educated author asked himself whether the press creates the mood of the population or whether it merely reflects it. To do this, he looked at surveys of the form “What do you think is the most important problem at the moment?” The answers vary from year to year... “Does the press influence the mood of the population or does it reflect it?” continue reading the article Does the press influence the mood of the population or does it reflect it? first appeared on travels through distant lands and scientific thoughts.... IRL
I don’t have to explain to anyone what “IRL” means, do I? (For those who really don't know: it's short for "in real life", i.e. in what is perhaps just a huge simulation but is not perceived as such. But you didn't get that from me!) So yesterday IRL... Read more... Read more

This long week was quite short. But most of my readers know that the long week has nothing to do with the length of the week. If you don't know yet, I recommend a somewhat lesser-known book series by Terry Pratchett. The world doesn't always have to be flat. Nevertheless, the week was not short on highs and lowlights. In the project study, the students were reminded that they are responsible for carrying out the review. The goal of the zero sprint was to become capable of development. Most people were able to demonstrate that. In the field of software engineering... Read more

The newsreel from March 31, 2024 is really a cauldron of color: Söder is denouncing, the “Trumpeltier” is making money on the stock market, Apple and Google are being counted, the environment is fighting for species and a mowing-free May and the last mainstream humanist is on a farewell tour. And no, neither Lanz nor Precht are meant... Read more

I just got the call from the super-connected Alex Steininger that our mutual friend Ben Kihnel died in his sleep. He was only 48. Ben was employee #2 of CD Baby. (#1 was the great John Steup.) John hired Ben the day we moved the company to Portland, Oregon. I don’t even know how we met Ben. Then all of the early employees at CD Baby were Ben’s friends, so Ben was really the start and the heart of everything for us in Portland. Ben was one of my favorite people. In Harry Potter, there’s a magic mirror that reflects the viewer’s desire. What Harry sees in that mirror is very different than what Dumbledore or Ron sees, because their desires are all different. Imagine if there was something similar that shows you what you most need to believe right now. It shows proof to support whatever perspective would most benefit you. Upon seeing it, you instantly believe it, internalize it, and act upon it. Someone feeling sadly disconnected might see proof that everyone is connected. Someone trying to create something might see proof that people will love it. Someone... Read more
