“A man is more human through what he keeps quiet about than through what he says.”

Feuerwerk

I've had more fireworks in my life than I would have liked, and I was paid for them too. I've never really understood the completely pointless shooting on New Year's Eve. Aside from the damage that comes with it, the costs are something that could easily be spent on other things, maybe even for a good cause.

Today it has shown me once again how backward and selfish many of my contemporaries are. Fortunately, one or two of them end their lives before they can cause any major damage.

Walk

During a walk I actually still have the Buga shower found again, somewhat hidden, but in good condition. Now they are away or locked up, like the East Germans used to be; whether this is necessary for their own protection or whether it is really just to stop them from running away, we will surely know soon.

“We must imagine Sisyphus as a happy man” (Albert Camus, 2023: 145).

Since swimming or dancing just isn't working out at the moment, the walks are doing me good. And there's always something new to discover in our city. Like the current expansion of the cycle paths along the Neckar, which is also removing the last remaining urban green space. Since more major construction projects are expected there soon, this is only logical.

“There remains a world of which man is the only master. What captivated him was the illusion of another world” (Albert Camus, 2023: 137f).

It's amazing how much change is lying on the street these days. Constantly bending down in the pedestrian zone is also healthy. I don't ask myself why I'm the only one with good eyesight or am willing to go to the trouble of looking for a cent, but instead I take the collected change to the bank at the end of the year; it's remarkable what accumulates over the course of the year.

“However, one can never be amazed enough at the fact that everyone lives as if no one ‘knew’” (Albert Camus, 2023: 27).

Grilling

I was pleased that I finally managed to get the grill going for Christmas, although my better half assured me that I was a bit out of practice. My products could be described as sporty or even rustic, but I certainly enjoyed them. When I was still grilling at Treffpunkt Europa, I had a fan base every year who came to the stand especially for the sporty sausages, and also a slightly older gentleman who shared my preference for rustic grilled products. My cooking tip: with a good mustard, you can eat anything. The mustard is supposed to neutralize harmful "combustion products" - or at least that's what I've heard once.

My candle making was less successful, as I burned more than just my fingers - literally. I'm saving the remaining wax for future attempts, and until then I'll also need a few new glass containers.

“There is no fate that cannot be overcome by contempt”
(Albert Camus, 2023: 143).

During both activities, the barbecue as well as the candle making, I was accompanied not only by the good advice of my better half but also by Albert Camus' absurd person, it couldn't be more fitting.

"I do not know whether this world has a meaning beyond itself. But I know that I do not know what this meaning is and that it is not possible for me to recognize it for the time being."

Albert CAmus (2023: 64)
