After the terrible war of aggression in Ukraine, by the Putin system, my eyes opened. With all the will for international understanding, I have come to the conclusion that the partnership with the Russian city of Novorossiysk can no longer be actively pursued at the moment. How should we cultivate our partnership with these decision-makers in the coming years? That's simply impossible. That's why I'm calling for the partnership to be suspended.
Maybe we were too naïve. Years ago we could and should have recognized that Russia, with its dictator Putin, with the Russian army and with its intervention in Syria, waged a terrible war and committed terrible war crimes. Personally, I will no longer take part in partnership meetings after the mayor of Novorossiysk has come out as an ardent supporter of Putin.
I am happy to continue to maintain good contacts with all people who share our values, regardless of their origin.

Dear Herbert, I am pleased that you are supporting the Lord Mayor to end this unspeakable partnership. You are honored to admit that your eyes have only just opened up, what a huge wrong decision the municipal council made in 2019 in this matter.
But we must be able to expect our people's representatives to do their research before they make decisions on behalf of the people. That is precisely why we elect and support representatives of the people.
In the case of this partnership, we must assume that all municipal councils knew that Putin is a dictator who has been murdering people en masse since 2008 at the latest and who has also been murdering en masse citizens of the Union since 2014 at the latest and does not shy away from murders even in Germany.
With a few questions, the local councilors could have known that the new sister city is not just a Crimean War city whose population has also been massively supporting this war since 2014, even if some of them are not even murdering themselves.
They could also have known that city officials are mere puppets — and now even accomplices.
Our democracy will perish because our people's representatives no longer accept responsibility for their wrong decisions. And so it should not become a habit that every time you just want to be wrong or have been deceived.
I hope that you will not follow the SPD's latest suggestion to conclude an alibi partnership with a city in the Ukraine, because this would only mock the victims, at the latest when they are forced to do so by the mayor, wet happily to sit at a table with the murderers of their children.
