The 1970s in Heilbronn

My first election campaign that I can remember was in 1972 at my father's side, when we went from door to door for the Liberals and I was also allowed to watch the posters - at that time still with a brush and paste - watching.

At the age of 14, I began to become politically active myself and finally joined young people who founded their own youth organization and did so against strong resistance in our party at the time and its old youth organization.

What was interesting about this phase was that one had to look around for "allies" and was thus able to experience the entire spectrum of political life. The 1970s were characterized by the fact that political diversity and range increased sharply after the 1950s and 1960s, and completely new political movements emerged, which I was not convinced of at the time of their “durability” as they lacked their own content. Today I have to state that in socially and economically good times it is also possible to do politics without content - and to do so very successfully.

Looking back at the 1970s, I also remember the young European federalists, who became rarer in those years, at least in Heilbronn, and whose European ideals generally lost popularity among the general population - with increasing economic security, social interest changed more quickly to experience - and comprehensible topics, whereby the actual foundations of this economic success were regarded as "uncomfortable" and thus fell more and more into oblivion.

As a European federalist, who has also been able to chair the EUROPA-UNION in Heilbronn since 2005, it was a great pleasure for me to hear from the director of the Heilbronn city archive, Prof. Dr. Christhard Schrenkto be asked if I could write a short article about the Young European Federalists of the 1970s.

I was very happy to comply with this request and am now looking forward to the presentation of the publication "The 1970s in Heilbronn - Knowledge Break 2018" by the Heilbronn City Archives, which will be published on Monday, December 2nd, 2019 at 16.30 p.m Otto Rettenmaier house takes place.
