The curtain man

It was 1977 when I first noticed the curtain man. He had his shop in the neighborhood and probably furnished half of Heilbronn with curtains and other utensils that people probably liked to have in their own homes back then.

I noticed him because he usually came prancing along, and I had the impression that he had just come out of a disco around the corner. His favorite topics were also "Saturday Night Fever" and a music group called the Bee Gees.

Now that I've probably reached the age of the curtain man of yesteryear, I catch myself again and again having Bee Gees on the turntable - some music has to grow into it first.

The Bee Gees started their musical career in 1958 (!), although they probably only became better known in the mid-1960s and were able to exist alongside the Beatles.

But it wasn't until the mid-1970s, in the wake of the disco wave and combined with a new start, that they were able to take off worldwide; The movie “Saturday Night Fever” gave their music its final breakthrough - at least as long as disco was still popular.

At the end of the 1980s they managed to return to the charts again with the song You Win Again (1987), only to finally end their career at the beginning of the noughties.

Even though I now and then, obviously due to COVID-19, dance through my own living room to their music, I still don't have my own favorite Bee Gees.

The following Bee Gees records are familiar to me and are definitely worth listening to as soon as you are over a certain age.

  • Best of Bee Gees (1969)
  • Saturday Night Fever: The Original Movie Sound Track (1977)
  • 20 Greatest Hits (1978)
  • Spirits Having Flown (1979)
  • Greatest (1979)
  • Stay Alive (1983)
  • ESP (1987)
  • Timeless: The All-Time Greatest Hits (2017)
  • The Many Faces of Bee Gees (2020) - will I ever reach the right age for this record?

If you listen to Bee Gees yourself or even think they are very good, then I would be happy to receive your additional record references; I certainly won't ask how old you are — I promise.

"Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk, I'm a woman's man: no time to talk."
