The Dancer

Before anyone gets the wrong idea, this is not about Hafenstrasse or a few well-known or lesser-known establishments, but solely about the most recent performance of the Theaterschiff Heilbronn.

Since September 24, 2022, the Theaterschiff has been inviting you on a musical journey through time to the "Golden Twenties" - which are now a hundred years ago. It covers everything from the hit song of the day to the Charleston, and I'm pretty sure anyone older than me could sing along to most of these songs without much trouble.

I had the great pleasure of witnessing the dress rehearsal on September 17, 2022 and was immediately enthusiastic about this in-house production of the Theaterschiff. That's why I didn't miss it and went straight to the performance on September 30, 2022. And because it was so beautiful, we also bought tickets for the gala performance "Der Eintänzer" on October 29, 2022. At least until then, my better half has to put up with it when I hear songs like "What can Siegesmund help..." or "I'm from head to toe..." echoing through the apartment.

The major theme of this play is the need for pleasure and entertainment during what is now known as the Golden Twenties, a very difficult time for most people at the time — in retrospect, one can see something positive in even the greatest hardship.

In these years, women were increasingly looking for their position in society and fighting for equality (not for gender asterisks), which they had more than earned themselves in the previous war years, and everyone, whether man or woman, tried between two world wars simply staying alive. And those who don't just numb themselves with alcohol and drugs, also get a little bit of sunshine.

And so in "Der Eintänzer" well-known songs like "Can love be a sin", "We are from head to toe", "Weekend and sunshine" or even "The men are all criminals" should not be missing. My very personal favorite of the evening is the song "I'm set on love from head to toe", which was written in 1930 by Friedrich Hollander was composed for the film "The Blue Angel". In the film, the song was written by Marlene Dietrich in her role of Lola Lola sung. Just behind the interpretation of Marlene Dietrich should now be the interpretation of the three actresses of the theater ship Agnieszka Bonomi, Cosima Greeven and Beatrice Kaps-Zurmahr kommen.

But also the man in the round Markus Streubel, convinces the audience all along the line. His performance of "So ein Erdwurm hat's gut", a song that most of Heinz Rühmann know, I just can't get it out of my head.

In the belly of the theater ship, which incidentally has space for 123 paying spectators, the audience is whisked away to a small 1920s café. Cosima Greeven as Josephine set up the restaurant and her staff are also the artists; there are Agnieszka Bonomi as Mizzi, the "eye candy for gentlemen", who should all watch her pocket watch, and the cigarette seller Beatrice Kaps-Zurmahr as Anneliese with a slightly criminal past and of course Markus Streubel as Max, the dancer, who serves on the dance podium for the ladies.

The songs range from Walter Kollo, Leo case and Ralph Benatzkx and Kurt Weil, Mischa Spolianski, Friedrich Hollander, Rudolph Nelson to Hanns Eisler with texts by ao Kurt Tucholsky and Bertolt Brecht.

The play was made by Christian Marten Molnar staged, who also took it upon himself to give the popular hit “Weekend and Sunshine” a whole new twist. The musical direction has Andrew Benz.

For the costumes takes over Catherine Flubacher responsibility and I think she did her job really well. It remains to be noted that the entire piece not only has wonderful songs to offer, but also rapid costume changes. And anyone who is lucky enough to see this piece more than once will also notice that - intentionally or unintentionally - there are confusions.

Last but not least I would like to order the team Jochen Wieland Mention that the gastronomic care of the evening excellently and very professionally.

As I said, I thoroughly enjoyed the first two performances of the play and am already looking forward to the gala performance with live music. I can warmly recommend this play to all my readers, and it would really be a shame if even a single seat was left unoccupied in the coming performances!

That's why you'll find the current program right here, and I also suggest that you secure a ticket for one of the performances right away — you won't regret it!

  • The 1920s were so progressive that we haven't reached the cultural and societal level of the 2020s yet. And in between, a lot happened that nobody remembers.
