nothing new in the West

The of Erich Maria Note The novel, written in 1928, is still required reading for every citizen today. And if you don't want to read the book, you can watch the film since 1930 Carl laemmle fall back on, which is still one of the masterpieces of film history - and quite rightly so!

Delbert mann took on this topic in 1979 and dared to remake the film, which was nowhere near the quality of the film Carl laemmle reached. But you can also watch this film without further ado.

And so yesterday, because I've already seen the first two films, I also saw the new work by Edward berger viewed; I shouldn't have done this. The fact is, you can gather as many untalented people as you like, and even then nothing good will come of it.

Another splatter film that can only score with its very serious topic, but ultimately doesn't do it justice. Worse, it casually and subtly promotes a very specific political perspective, which is something a serious anti-war film shouldn't do.

My conclusion: pure waste of time and money — ergo, it will be a blockbuster for us.

Addendum

Christopher F. Schuetze attempted by the New York Times (28.10.2022/XNUMX/XNUMX). in a separate post about this film the intention of Edward berger to understand something better. Ultimately, however, he also gets to the heart of the matter: "More gruesome than previous film adaptations of the novel".

Jan Böhmermann

You don't have to like him, but he's currently one of the few representatives of the "fourth estate" in our country who still quite inexperienced put their finger in the wound. Most of the media have long since committed themselves to court reporting or try to keep their readers happy with fantasy stories (e.g. Spiegel and Bild) or simply with "Sex and Crime" (e.g. Die Zeit and FAZ). .

And so it was again a great joy yesterday Jan Böhmermann this time targeted our so-called protection of the constitution. You can now form your own opinion about his work by the files on the National Socialist underground (NSU) downloads and browses through it. Originally, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution wanted to keep these files secret from us citizens for 120 years, but after they destroyed the most incriminating files themselves, the ban was shortened to 30 years — probably a typical West German compromise.

By the way, recently he has been very successful the interrelationships of German occupational policy discussed with the Russian secret service.

Once again, this time a little more seriously, there is a discussion about whether it actually makes sense to conclude far-reaching economic and trade agreements with one's own enemies of the system. By that I mean more than just raw material deliveries against payment, namely technology transfer and transfer of ownership of economically important companies and companies or infrastructure.

Just today, the People's Republic of China announced again and more strongly - so that even a professional German politician should be able to understand it - that they continue to stand resolutely behind the Russian Federation and made it clear once again that their goal is the downfall of western civilization with all our values .

You don't have to resort to platitudes like "axis of evil" to see that all anti-democrats have joined forces with all totalitarians and dictators and other criminals and lunatics of all stripes to destroy all open societies once and for all. Russian state media are already quoting their masterminds who openly call for even our children to be cremated and gassed.

So one could think that our politicians and those fellow citizens who, for whatever reason, are in crucial economically and socially important positions, at least think about whether it is a good idea to fraternize with those who alone are only responsible for our downfall have the objective.

By that I don't mean those economic ties that were very carefully created in the 1970s during the policy of détente in order to help the East with the rapprochement that certainly took place at the time. A Willy Brandt despite the policy of detente, has neither sold off its own infrastructure nor given away important technologies!

The sell-out of our country and the entire West only began later, namely when professional politicians quite openly and until recently traveled from East to West with suitcases of money and their personal wealth, no matter what economic situation we were in, increased constantly and fantastically to have. In the meantime, it has almost become the norm for professional politicians to be multi-millionaires, or at least they all belong to the top income earners in our countries. Helmut Kohl liked to describe this change as a "spiritual and moral turn" and still testifies today that his Palatinate humor is unbeatable.

Democracies always crumble and die from within. This realization has undoubtedly prevailed in all totalitarian countries, and so dictators buy like Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin and Salman ibn Abd al-Aziz now entire governments in the West or just their most important decision-makers, who then sell off their countries without any inhibitions.

But these dictators don't always have a lucky hand — luckily for us! — and they speculate with small states like Hungary or Austria or with splinter parties whose candidates simply cannot win a majority in democracies.

We should all be aware of these issues before we sell off the next key technologies or other parts of our infrastructure. The really bad thing about the whole thing is that Olaf Scholz would be overthrown immediately by his party alone if he wanted to sell parts of the Port of Hamburg or even Frankfurt Airport to US investors.

  • What perspective does the remake propagate? I haven't seen the Netflix version...

The "filmdienst" says: The lavishly realized film version of the literature has different accents than the novel and the first film version from 1930 and takes up additional political topics, such as peace negotiations. The main emphasis is on the realistic depiction of the battles, which spare nothing in cruelty.

    So realism of war.
As long as you still use the euphemism "fallen" for those killed instead of shot, strangled, burned, crushed, stabbed, torn, disembowelled, starved and the like. So everything that people in uniform do to other people with and without uniform because they are ordered to do so.

    • Basically, it makes sense to discuss things that you have experienced yourself or, in this case, seen. Professional expertise would have made sense for the complex realization of the film - bloodthirsty make-up is simply not enough. Nor how directors or actors imagine war. "Realistic" in that war is cruel and mostly deadly.
The "political" topics that were also included were introduced more than amateurishly - and the agenda behind them actually serves very one-sided political ideas, which do not have the nonsense of war as a topic, but are intended to defame certain groups in a general way - quite strikingly mere black white thinking.
I don't want to reply any further to your topic of the necessity of technical terms, because nowadays non-educational is a quality feature.
