Walk
We took the subway to downtown Munich and from there walked through the city to Schwabing and back through the English Garden. Since two of my favorite cafés could no longer be found, we simply enjoyed a new café right on the Viktualienmarkt. Since the weather was good, we also went to a beer garden - with a bit of luck we even found a place.
The city center itself was very well attended, which comes as no surprise since the city as a whole is very clean and there are plenty of attractive shops and restaurants. Even a slightly larger demonstration, which started at Stachus and finally marched past our café, complemented the overall urban picture instead of scaring people away - there were no wild farmers, Monday marchers, neo-Nazis or caliphate conjurers, but simply only citizens who drew attention to a legitimate concern.
Meanwhile, Free Voters candidates in Heilbronn provided information about how we want to make Heilbronn more attractive again - if I had my way, with a little more order and cleanliness and, above all, more transparency in city affairs, because if disorder and mismanagement prevail in the town hall, everyone will go to waste City.
In the evening the eldest took us to Donisl on Marienplatz. He didn't know that I still had fond memories of his story. In 1984 the innkeeper did it himself in the mirror headlines and as a short research showed, its hosts still hadn't learned much in 2023. But that didn't detract from the whole thing, because the roast ox was okay; For me personally, dumplings would have rounded off the roast better than the potatoes served. The evening was still a pleasure, but that was clearly due to the people involved.
As nice as it may be to reminisce sometimes, real life happens here and now. The efforts of the youth to show me around Munich were also very nice. But cities don't change that quickly and I was already there when the youth in question wasn't even a blink of an eye.
In any case, it was a wonderful stay in Munich and you also have to acknowledge that the world as a whole is constantly improving, even if you don't want to admit it yourself.
Addendum
Even if I do that Café Extrablatt I couldn't find it anymore, because Munich had already moved on in 1998, but now I'm fine with it Constantine Wecker Can't get the music for Kir Royal out of my head.
40 years
This year I managed to visit my oldest at our shared alma mater. I started studying there in 1984. Maximilian will finish his studies there this year. My first accommodation, an old air force building, was actually still there. Unfortunately, my later student apartment is no longer there. This was probably replaced a few years ago by a new building, which would also have to be rebuilt by now. Some of the old “star systems”, the new buildings at the time, were actually still there, but in a very poor condition. My comrades who were the first to move in there will still be amazed that these buildings still exist today. However, my oldest lives in a new building at the other end of campus, which is barely 5 years old and is also falling apart again.
Which can still explain the state of the Bundeswehr quite well. Our tax billions are mainly used so that a few illustrious fellow citizens can make stupid and stupid money. National defense is different!
European Action Day
In the last few decades there have been several attempts to copy Europe as a meeting place. The most successful one is probably the European Action Day in Stuttgart, which is still going strong today. In contrast to Heilbronn, this is organized by the State Ministry with the participation of other state ministries as well as the representations of the European Parliament and the Commission in Munich and is supported by the Stuttgart city administration and the majority in the local council, although they do not look at how they themselves profit from this day can pull.
Even if the European Action Day has not been able to develop the charm of Europe's meeting place, at least so far, it is a very successful event. And so we people from Heilbronn at EUROPA-UNION enjoy supporting this day in Stuttgart. Even though I had to leave Stuttgart early this time, the day was a successful start to the weekend.
Barely three hours later I was able to get to know a new restaurant in Unterhaching. Good home-style Greek cuisine, which differs very pleasantly from many Greek restaurants in Germany. The setting of the restaurant called myth Very Mediterranean, especially in the spacious outdoor area, which was particularly effective in the current good weather on site.
