Hertenstein talks

The EUROPA-UNION Heilbronn has been organizing the since 2017 Hertenstein talks in Heilbronn; these talks are a logical continuation of the 1946 talks in Switzerland which led to the Hertenstein program and ultimately to the European Union.

The importance of these talks was very quickly recognized throughout Europe and some regretted that they were now taking place in Heilbronn and still in German. In the meantime, the participants from all parts of Europe and Germany come to the talks, and the German language has become established, even if English and French-language conversations are also part of the talks.

Unfortunately, since Heilbronn does not offer the Europe-friendly environment that many of us had hoped for, I am now considering moving the Hertenstein Talks to a Europe-friendly environment from 2024. My goal is to remain in the vicinity of Heilbronn for as long as possible for the next few years before we return the Hertenstein Talks to their actual place of origin.

Oh, how I wished that my hometown — at least its citizens — could become so acquainted with the European idea that Heilbronn would become the ideal place for discussion, also worthy of the European idea. But unfortunately, I have to admit it to myself, the focus of us Heilbronners is completely different. And so it doesn't have to surprise me that even the Experimenta - with all its financial resources - is slowly but surely being converted into a Ringelpiez that you can touch.

With my "Time Thieves Post"I aroused emotions yesterday, at least that's what the many reactions suggest. So I'll start with a poem by William Shakespeare in the menu.

sun 19

Devouring Time, thou blunt the lion's paws,
And make the earth devour her own sweet brood;
Pluck the keen teeth from the fierce tiger's jaws,
And burn the long-liv'd phoenix in her blood;
Make glad and sorry seasons as thou fleets,
And do whate'er thou wilt, swift-footed Time,
To the wide world and all her fading sweets;
But I forbid the one most heinous crime:
O, carve not with thy hours my love's fair brow,
North draw no lines there with thin antique pen;
Him in thy course untainted do allow
For beauty's pattern to succeeding men.
Yet do thy worst, old time: despite thy wrong,
My love shall in my verse ever live young.

William Shakespeare, 1609

And so that there are no more misunderstandings, I'll add a so-called "Carpe Diem" poem. This is from Robert Herrick.

To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time

Gather ye rose-buds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today
Tomorrow will be dying.

The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
The higher he's a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
And nearer he's to setting.

That age is best which is the first,
When youth and blood are warmer;
But being spent, the worse, and worst
Times still succeed the former.

Then be not coy, but use your time,
And while ye may, go marry;
For having lost but once your prime,
You may tarry forever.

On November 9, 2007, the German Bundestag finally decided to erect a monument to freedom and unity in Berlin. The initiative for this came in 1998 from a small group of politicians, city planners and journalists and was directly related to the creation of the memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe, which was finally inaugurated on May 10, 2005.

This memorial made of 2 cuboid concrete steles did not just inspire me, and so I was delighted when the Bundestag wanted to erect a memorial to freedom and unity in Berlin. I was really excited when, in 711, a Stuttgart company was successful with its design for a so-called “unit seesaw”.

But then it got really tragic, then just funny, and so over the past ten years I've had even more wondrous conversations with a wide variety of members of the Bundestag. During this time, countless monuments to Prussia and other landmarks of an outdated monarchy were renovated in Berlin, but obviously not a single monument was erected for our democracy.

And so I had already come to terms with the fact that the Freedom and Unity Monument in Berlin will probably come to nothing when construction actually began on May 19, 2020.

And according to a newspaper report by the Heilbronnerstimme (November 10.11.2022, 11: 2023), the monument now described as “Citizens on the Move” is actually to be completed in the coming year. Berlin is already planning its inauguration for autumn XNUMX - I wouldn't be surprised if this also happens like an airport.

Time and patience
There is a very effective way
to keep time at Schlawittel:
You pick up your pocket watch
and follows the pointer steadily,
She walks so slowly then, so good
like a well-bred sheep,
puts foot in front of foot so full of manners
than like a damsel of Saint-Cyr.
However, you dream yourself for a while
so moves the chaste violet
with legs like an ostrich
and secretly look like a cougar.
And again you look down on her;
ha, misery! - But what is that?
She smiles innocently
again the daintiest second pas.
